In summer of 2023 we started Gulf Winds Wildlife Sanctuary's bird rescue. We started our bird rescue efforts due to the number of people who contacted us about birds that they were unable to care for anymore do to the owners health reasons, and home owners associations requiring the owners to find new homes for the birds due to noise levels. Most of the birds we are contacted about have been with the same owner for 16-50 years, so we knew it would be hard for the birds to settle into a new home and environment. If we had not stepped in and offered these birds a permanent home at our sanctuary they could have easily spent the rest of their life flop around from home to home. This is extremely hard on the larger birds as they tend to bond with 1 person. When this does happens it tends to cause the birds to get aggressive and/or cause them to develop bad habits.
Since we are able to offer the birds a permanent home at our sanctuary, the birds, with a little time, patience, love, and lots of treats are able to settle in to their new environment and thrive at our sanctuary. Even the birds that came into our care after being flopped around from home to home are able to settle in at our sanctuary and eventually lose some of their aggression. With the steady and predictable care they receive at our sanctuary a lot of the behavioral issues the birds arrived with seem to resolve on their own.
Since the summer of 2023 we have been able to help and offer permanent homes to over 100 birds... and we will continue to help more with the help of our donators.
You can help us in our efforts by becoming a monthly donor. The more supplies and funds we receive the more birds we can help!
